Photo shoot.

A couple weeks ago, was extremely monumental for everyone here at TBR. We had our first of many

photo shoots for our upcoming website. The day was long and tedious, but rewarding none the less.

Montreal had beautiful weather and we took advantage of it by having our editorial shoot outside in the

back alleys of our beautiful city. The models, dressed in our new apparel and accessories which really

exhibited the whole urban street vintage approach that TBR embodies.

The new merchandise is a mix of genuinely conventional pieces and statement pieces. Garments can

be appreciated by the ambiguous fashion forward individual or by the introverted minimalist; essentially

there is something for everyone. From button ups for both men and women, crew necks, knits, wind

breakers, leather skirts for the ladies and much more.

We hope you are just as excited as we are for the big launch of our website, a lot of sweat and tears

have gone into the overall process and we cannot be more proud!

The TBR team cannot wait to share it with you!

Thanksgiving in NYC

"This past Thanksgiving weekend we were lucky enough to go to the "Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made Of" and purchase new merchandise for our store. Luckily there is a bunch of thrift stores in NYC, Soho to be exact, with designer labels at a discounted prices.

Day 1: Overwhelmed with excitement, we went to the actual stores that inspire the type of clothing and accessories we sell at TBR.  First stop was MM by Maison Martin Margiela, which gave us all nominal heart attacks.  We then stopped at Marc by Marc Jacobs, just because. Carried ourselves to Bergdorfs which made us realize "You are more poor than you think" and of course the other famous retail names (Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton (RIP Marc Jacobs).

Day 2: After an overwhelming lunch at Eataly we trekked to Soho and started our hunt.  The first thrift store we stopped at was Finderz Keeperz which had an extreme hipster feel to it. You could find the most unimaginable garments there. Next was Housing Works which was where we found most of our items and also met a friendly pooch.

Day 3: Was spent doing some last minute shopping at the Woodbury outlets, for some discounted high end pieces, and spending four hours at the border.

All in all our trip was very successful, and we'd love to visit again very soon!"

Fall Trend Forecast

Layers, Tuques, Scarves, Knits…didn’t you guys miss them??? Well luckily they’re coming back. It’s finally September AKA every fashion guru’s favorite month of the year. Time to bundle up, zip up our coats and sip our mocha-latte-frappe-whatevers. So to ease your mind, we decided to do a trend forecast. Presented are the prominent styles that’ll be exceptionally significant this fall.

The military look is back in style! But did it ever really leave? This classic look is great for fall whether it be a jacket, pants or even a bag. This look can be paired with anything; jeans, slacks, leather boots or sneakers. Camo apparel will bring your outfit to the next level. Make it fun by pairing it with colorful accents, like a red scarf or a bright orange tuque. For the girls, create some interesting contrast by wearing a feminine blouse.

Not only are backpacks very ‘in’ right now, but they are also really practical! A great backpack can be the accessory that brings your outfit to the next level. Whether you’re going to the office or to school, backpacks are appropriate for all, and, easy to carry on your daily bike commute. For a less casual look, go for a leather or twill backpack.

Yet another gloriously fashionable yet practical item; the scarf. Fight off the daunting autumn chill (that only reminds us that winter is coming) with a cozy, chunky scarf. Protect your neck with a thick, knit scarf. Classic greys and navy will never go out of style, but also keep an eye out for great tartan plaids or interesting stripe patterns. A cool scarf can make a basic outfit interesting and fun.

Why pick and choose when you can wear it all? Thank you, fall, for allowing us to wear all our favorite items at once. Pair up a t-shirt, with a button up, with a chunky sweater, and if you’re feeling really crazy, throw on a down vest on top of that. Double or triple up the layers for your chilly morning commute, then take off a layer or two and throw it in your trendy backpack for some sunny afternoon hangouts.

Wool hats are perfect for fall weather and can help you out when you’re having a particularly bad hair day. This season, wool hats don’t only come in tuques. Seek out a floppy, brimmed, wool hat to really set you apart. Baseball hats are also starting to come out in wool as well. Keep it fun and keep it cool with these new styles that are great for both men and women.

New season, New beginnings

Fall can easily be one of the most ambivalent seasons. Some people feel its the beginning of a positive new start and some feel as though its the end to an amazing year. Fall is the season that most people get out of their spontaneous schedules and return to their "humdrum" lifestyles. Here at TBR we appreciate falls iconic aura and decided to capitalize on it. After plenty of discussions we here at TBR decided it would be wise to close our Downtown Montreal Based store and become an online store. Our online store, which is now in pre-production, will be accessible to all of our clients and will still have that exemplary vintage spin on each garment. This past year has been ridiculously eventful for us at TBR. When we moved onto St.Catherine, we decided to change our overall look completely. Our style went from hipster vintage to a more street urban vintage, because of our new demographic. We had a ton of fun at the opening of our branch and to be quite honest we will miss it here. Peep below for some of the pics of our amazing spot:

TBR Style, Can Be My Style

This week is not only vital to the Montreal Fashion industry, but it is also a significant one for us. A new group of superb interns have started working for TBR and we are so pleased to have them here. We noticed each of them had an intense personal sense of style, so we decided it’d be interesting for them to put together outfits for each other with the different garments we sell in our store. The exciting thing about Fashion Week is that you have to manage your everyday life mixed up to the crazy-cool Fashion events taking over the city, while remaining your top Fashion-self. Not easy, indeed! Well, we’ve got your back, here at TBR, with three Fashion Week approved outfits that you can wear during the day also, straight from our vintage urban closets.

Monique (1)

Up first, we have the lovely Monique, Psychology graduate & (aspiring artist), wearing a white Generation cropped tank top with an Entourage black leather pencil skirt. Since Monique is, as we would call her, petite, a cropped top adds length to her upper body, showing off her belly button. This way, she is free to pair it with a high-waisted skirt, like the one we used. Plus, the color of the skirt reminds us of the darkness of her hair, which works out really well for her.

Monique (2)

In order to add a little bit of shape to her tiny body, we tied up a Ralph Lauren striped shirt around her waist, giving her look a very classy urban vintage touch, just as her personality is. The beauty of this outfit is that it really can be worn thorough the day, and then, at night. You can either switch your shoes from flats to high heels, or simple take off the tied shirt to make it more evening-out friendly. Finally, we decided to add to her outfit this beautiful Shop Rebel statement necklace so the white tank is not to boring by itself. And so, we have a perfectly balanced look for Montreal Fashion Week, day one!

Keerah (1)

Keerah, our second intern, free spirit & full-time clothes lover, was styled quite simply without forgetting about the Fashion statement making. Her look was directly inspired from the 80’s with its oversized blazers and very short bottom garments. On her, our stunning Donna Karan taupe blazer over a plain grey tank, since both colours go pretty well together. And… That’s it! The thing with oversized blazers, and even shirts, is that if they’re long enough for to you be wearing them in public and still look decent, simply add a pair of leggings under it. This way, you are safe from any types of misfortune (!), and you can still rock your casual & effortless urban vintage outfit!

Keerah (2)

As for the accessories we chose for her, we decided to use the gorgeous Shop Rebel pieces of jewelry that we have in store. Starting with this gold cuff bracelet that will be very IN this fall season. It’ll kind of replace the bangles sets trend of the past few years. Also, we put together the statement necklace that we previously used in Monique's looks, and a necklace created by linking two studded rose gold bracelets together. Since the outfit is so simple, we weren’t afraid to show-off our ring-bling side in this one.

Devin (1)

Finally, we have Devin who recently graduated from Concordia in Political Science and Human Rights. Along with her internship here at The Backroom, she is also a Domestic Media Monitor for Burma at the Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies. Here, she is wearing here a Les Tricots Tenkel cream sweater, over a vintage silk oversize shirt and DKNY dark blue jeans. This look was pulled for her specifically because of her light-colored hair. Colors like white, cream and buff tend to brighten her skin tone a lot. Also, it contrasts pretty well with the colorful abstract patterns of the shirt. Since the shirt has darker colors on it, we paired it with these amazing DKNY blue jeans, in order to make the sweater stand out even more.

Because of her academic background and her quite poised personality, Devin can pull off geeky urban looks like this one. Simply wear the collar inside the sweater for a more neat look or you can wear it outside the sweater, as we did here, to make it look more casual.

Monique: Hi everyone! My name is Monique. I am that girl that loves to do a bit of this and a bit of that. I enjoy painting during whatever free time I have and hope to hold an exhibit sometime in the near future. As for fashion,  I have always had a passion for it.  Over the years I have always found myself helping style many of my friends and family.  If I were to describe my style I don’t think I could because I love to mix it all up.  My style changes with my everyday mood.

One thing that won’t change about what I choose to wear is, I’ll always rock that “faux fur”, especially during our cold winters because of my huge love of animals.  This love also is the reason behind me choosing to be a vegetarian. Currently I am working on a blog about my life as a vegetarian. I hope to share it by the end of the month. In this blog I will be sharing my struggles along with a variety of delicious dishes (

I also love collecting quotes, I end this little autobiography with a much loved quote of mine which I have come to appreciate:  “follow your heart”.

Keerah: My name is Keerah, I am born and raised in Montréal. I have a live in the moment mentality and that reflects in my style. I usually dress for whatever I’m doing for the day and of course my mood has a lot to do with the choices I make. Because of my neurosis I usually wear black and when it’s not black it’s grey or navy blue. Jay-Z is my spirit animal, and Beyoncé is my god. I’m the usual socially-awkward confused girl in her twenties that wishes she was Carrie Bradshaw and knows she’ll never be her. I have this unsettling feeling ill only find my purpose in life when I’m on my death bed, so I’m just enjoying every opportunity I’m given. The direction I’m heading towards is Retail Design, and I’m content with that. Social Media gives me anxiety, but I do it anyways.

Devin: My name is Devin and I am a recent graduate from Concordia University. I studied Political Science and Human Rights and I have continued to be involved in this field through my internship at the Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies as a Domestic Media Monitor. Now that I am done school, I am taking some time off to explore my other interests. Street fashion and styling have always intrigued me, but I never had the time to get more involved. Now, I am finally able to explore both my interests in Human Rights and International Development as well as my passion for street style and I hope this will lead to many more opportunities in the industry.

Let's Up-Cycle

A new week means a new idea at The Backroom, where the innovative process never seems to stop.  Last week, my buyer and I had the pleasure of coming up with the idea of sewing classes at The Backroom.  Not that it is an original idea, because we know that many vintage stores do offer these services, however we decided to put our spin on it and offer “Up-Cycling Classes.”  Our goal is to teach our TBR lovers how to up-cycle their own garments and be a little more friendly when it comes to their closets.

For those of you that are not familiar with the term up-cycle, it is simply a fancy word used to describe how one would recycle their clothing by altering their garment; whether that means turning a long trench coat into a short trench coat, adding embellishments like rhinestones to your favorite blazer, or adding a colorful fabric to a basic garment to give it some spice or edge.

Offering a sewing class is one thing, but showing our clients how to stay on trend while cutting costs is another, so we hope you sign-up and learn how to up-cycle with us!

Special thank you and mention to Garrett Naccarato for the poster design.  To see more of Garrett’s work please take a look at his website and his work at: and

Collaborations and Customizations

Just two weeks ago my team and I had the pleasure of meeting a local underground artist who goes by the name GoldyGoldz.  After discovering him through social media networks, we decided to take a closer look at the young talented man and listen to his mixtape, Family Forever, on  Shortly after, we were contacted by GoldyGoldz himself for a possible future collaboration, and we scheduled a meeting to get to know him better.  After quickly falling in love with his humble yet lively personality we rapidly jumped on board and agreed to customize and style him for his video shoot the following weekend.

In just two days a Pinterest page,, was created to develop GoldyGoldz as brand versus just an artist. Ideas such as: “everything that I touch turns into gold,” gold bricks, Egyptian gods and goddesses, gold décor, gold fruit, and designer brands were all thrown on the table in order to get our creative juices going. Once we developed a concrete theme and we felt confident about our brainstorming.

The magic touch of our TBR urban street vintage style and GoldyGoldz lead us to create a beautiful custom piece.

Summer Leathers – The End Result

After a couple weeks of built up anticipation, all it took was a couple blog posts, a pinterest board, some photography skills, and a beautiful model, for the completion of the final post on summer leathers!  As you know, leather has been our favorite material to experiment with this summer because we find it to be daring.  As we have been paying close attention to the trends leather happened to be a big one this summer even though this material usually strikes up during the fall season.

We want our clients to know leather can be worn anywhere, anytime, and during ANY season – not just the fall season.  We decided to style our lovely model Lilya in a series of different leather looks that can be worn to the office, on a casual summer day, to an event, or even while hanging out with friends.  Each image is meant to represent a different kind of woman because we want our clients to know that whether you are a young professional or a student you can still style your leather piece to suit your needs.

Take a look below at the different looks we captured all with different colors, different textures, and different shapes of leather.
